Who will be next to make a CLEAN START?

I’ve just returned from a jam-packed weekend in Austin, Texas! First stop in my Texan adventure was at the Fox Network where I was a guest on Good Day Austin. Thanks to my great food stylist and city tour guide, Johanna, my next stop was at Whole Foods Market’s corporate office where I personally delivered a CLEAN START cookbook to company CEO John Mackey (okay, so this picture shows about how far they let me get, and yes, this is the front lobby!).

IMG_1764

Of course, as a cyclist, I had to make a stop at Lance Armstrong’s bike shop, Mellow Johnny’s, but I’ll spare you from those pictures as I realize I’m getting further and further from my point! And finally, I enjoyed the incredible offerings at the Lake Austin Spa and Resort including mouth-watering meals and a deep-tissue massage that I’m sure did me a lot of good and that I’ll appreciate once I am more able to move again!

IMG_1773Most importantly, the real reason for this trip was to teach a CLEAN FOOD/CLEAN START cooking class as part of the Spa’s Culinary Week and what a thrill that was. Special thanks to Tina, my assistant, and Robbie, who invited me in the first place and made sure my stay was fantastic (which it definitely was)! Just walking the grounds of this magnificent resort is a treat, not to mention their incredible organic vegetable and flower garden, and to-die-for teaching kitchen. I’m hoping this won’t be my last visit!

Now that I’m back home again, I’m feeling rested, renewed and recharged! So, in an effort to help you all jump on the CLEAN START bandwagon with me and feel the same way, I’ve decided it’s time for a give away!

The first copies of my new book, CLEAN START, arrived on my doorstep just the other day and it is scheduled to hit the shelves of bookstores around the country starting 11/2. Before they do, I’m going to give away three books! All you need to do to enter is share a comment about how you’re going to make a clean start this fall – no matter where you’re starting from in your journey. Winners will be selected randomly and posted next Tuesday (10/26). Please share this with your friends so we can get as many ideas shared as possible for having a healthy, balanced and inspired clean start!

I’m in marathon season now, so it’s more important than ever to have an impeccably clean diet. The first race of the season is in 11 days, and when I get back I plan to eliminate the processed stuff that has crept in and focus again on pure, whole foods. Just because the item is vegan doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t chemical crapola. :-) Cheers!

I’m going to make a clean start by doing more gluten-free baking, trying to come up with healthier alternatives to the high-fat, low-fiber gluten-free options out there! I’m tired of bread that is nothing but white starch, sugar, and fat!

I’m very new to making a clean start so I’ll be adding more fruits & veggies to my daily meals. I also want to keep at least my breakfast & lunch vegetarian.

My family and I have been working our way to eating cleaner. With all that I have been reading, I see the importance of making this step. Thanks for such great books! We love your cookbook!

congrats on the book! For me a clean start is a life long change. In the past few years i have developed allergies and digestive problems. So what used to be a conscious choice is now necessary. Love to find new reads to keep myself motivated and learning something new is always a plus!

I have been looking so forward to the release of this new book! In fact, as an employee at a local Barnes & Noble, I still recommend Clean Food to customers on a regular basis (in fact, just talked to a lady about it yesterday). I was a HUGE supporter when it came out and remain so now. Over the years, my own eating habits have been extremely erratic, and as I am getting on in my thirties, I am not liking how I feel. So, I actually recently made a commitment to myself to start eating right, as well as working out. And since how a person looks and feels is largely due to what goes in one’s mouth, I am wanting to eat as natural and close to the source as I can, in order to meet my personal health and fitness goals. So this book is being released at the perfect time! This fall is going to mark a huge lifestyle change for me, my very own clean start and your new book will be a perfect companion on my journey.

I am going to make a clean start this fall by significantly reducing the amount of sugar I have in my diet. I am also going to increase my intake of those great leafy greens. I am also going to commit myself to taking time out for myself to relax. I can’t wait to see the new book. I have encouraged many of my friends to use the Clean Food cookbook and they love it just as I do. Thanks for taking the time to share your opinions on how we can eat great clean food.

    Hi Terry,
I have begun my clean start this fall by eating something green at every meal. I said no more to processed white foods/sugar. I also promised myself to have one workout outside a week. This is my absolutely favorite time of the year.

I adore your Clean Food cookbook. It’s a staple in my kitchen and has food stains on it to prove it.

Thank you for putting together these terrific books.

    Kind regards,
    Maggie

I’m making a Clean Start this fall by recommitting to clean eating. This summer was a stressful time and I let my eating get out of control and away from what I know is good for my body. As a personal trainer in training I need to walk the walk, not just talk the talk!!

My clean start this fall has been to include more green leafy veggies in my diet. I was inspired by your citrus dressing for greens in your cookbook!! This was such a ‘tasteful’ dish that I’ve returned to it over and over again and has enabled me to eat more greens! Thanks Terry!

After years of avoiding cooking, mostly because I was too lazy to bother last year I purchased Clean Food and slowly started expanding my repertoire and learning that protein doesn’t necessarily mean meat. This led to us participating in a CSA for 12 weeks from June through October and attempting to cook meals with everything that came in the box – resorting to Clean Food for ideas often. At the same time I quit my job to try and start a business of my own. So as I’m making a “clean start” in my career, I’d love to make a Clean Start in my diet and continue the progress made with Clean Food and the CSA.

I am making a clean start by taking care of my WHOLE being/soul – meditation, being mindful with my cooking and eating, buying organic from a local farmer and eliminating refined white sugar. Also, being patient with myself through this process and know that I am a work in progress. One breath can make a world of difference in a day. :)

i was most certainly feeding my children “clean” before i began, but then again, i grew up on wonder bread & bologna, miracle whip sandwiches! now, i make our whole wheat bread, we eat organic & local, consume boatloads of hummus, & should own stock in a balsamic import from modena! the next step for me is better planning ahead & a “clean” soup making party with friends!! happy changes to everyone!

Ate my way through first book…and will continue to do so, but my partner is newly gluten free and while we have become adept at adjusting recipies, we are excited to continue clean eating with new creative healthy creations. Eating clean has become even more of a focus since loss of my friend with breast cancer. Truly what she put into her body became critical affecting her quality of life and survival. In honor of her and her fight, I am committed to honoring my body and it’s symbiotic balance. Good luck and thank you for the book Terry. Lois

I had been looking for cookbooks and recipies to make meals that were lactose/dairy free, and then found your Clean Food book. What educational experience that was! I started cooking recipies from your Clean Food cookbook for dinners and have expanded my appreciation for veggies and grains. I now visit my local farmers market and pick up all the fresh organic locally grown fruits and vegetables I can for my family. I made recipies from your book for my family and they loved them. My family made a Clean Start by realizing the flavors that organically grown food can contain. And they learned that the processed foods are not that great for their bodies. Now my daughter who is planning on going off to college in the fall is wondering where she can get wholesome foods like we have been having at home because she has learned the benefits of eatting clean foods. She is hoping to keep her Clean Start going while away at school.

I’m going to make a clean start by telling more people about the benefits of eating “clean” – and how it can be done on a budget. Most people think it’s too expensive to eat this way, but surprisingly I found it to be quite the opposite. (And I FEEL so much better when I eat “clean”…..)

I LOVE your blog and your book, Clean Food. My husband actually bought it for me last year as he knows how much I love cookbooks. He didn’t know it was Vegan when he bought it and I had no idea that your book would start an incredible journey of clean and healthy living for me. I was nowhere near being Vegan when I got your book, not even close to being Vegetarian, but as I started cooking your recipes and learning more and more about health, I realized that I had to make the switch. I’ve been about 75% Vegan for about 4 months and I LOVE it. I’m obsessed with finding and trying new recipes and would LOVE LOVE LOVE a copy of your new book, Clean Start. I know some people think being Vegan means eating like a bird, but I personally have been eating like a queen since I’ve started!! Thanks for all the great recipes and tips!

I’m going to continue our CLEAN path (we love CLEAN FOOD!) by continuing to offer good choices to my kids, and being a good example for my husband and my extended family. Limiting our meat eating respects our animals that we grow on our farm, and “beefing” up our veggie and grain intake makes for a more sustainable diet that is better for our bodies. This fall we’ll start planning our garden for next year and would love to be inspired by CLEAN START!

I’ve been purchasing organic food for years (I’m not a vegetarian, but we do eat vegetarian meals each week and limit our intake of beef and pork.) but still seemed to suffer from more than my share of aches and pains and other maladies (including extremely low ferritin and some other deficiencies, despite eating well, exercising, and taking supplements. How could I be deficient in anything?) that my doctors simply couldn’t explain. I decided to visit a holistic clinic. The internist there suspected that one of my medications was preventing me from properly digesting my food and absorbing the nutrients from it, so he gradually weaned me off of it. In the meantime, I gave up my one Coke a day and switched to green tea. I haven’t felt this good in years! For starters, I lost 15 pounds when it had been virtually impossible for me to lose even one for years, despite all my efforts. My swollen, stiff, painful joints became healthy again. I’m sleeping better, have more energy, and I don’t crave sweets and carbs anymore.

I discovered whole foods in the late 70′s, early 80′s when I started having babies and breastfeeding. La leche league was a huge influence on supporting good nutrition. Switching whole wheat, honey and cooking from scratch. Now we have your books and it is so inspiring. Finally people are waking up to “we are what we eat”! So in this process, my 79 year old Dad has asked me to help him with his Doctors to get him off of most of his 15 or so meds, and cook some healthy meals for him and his wife. I’m a vegan, raw foodist myself and I’m looking forward to this task. I know it won’t be easy, but a gift of love, no doubt. Don’t stop Terry, people need you! You go girl!

You are such an inspiration. I’m looking for healthier breakfast options…that is my next step. Now that we are approaching winter I just need some fresh ideas. I am trying to be gluten free but noticing the breads are not so good for me either. I’m concerned about the yeast and a lot of unnecessary starch so I’m trying to either find a healthy gluten free alternative or just do without bread altogether. I also need to get my child to eat more vegetables! That’s my biggest challenge of all.
