Do Your Skin Care Products Stack Up?

Eating clean is a must for healthy, glowing skin, but it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. I’m a low maintenance girl and try to keep it fairly simple: cleansing milk over soap, moisturizer daily and avoid products with parabens, mercury, lead, SLS…

This time of year, as sunscreens start to appear on store shelves, I find myself perusing the EWG.org website researching products and product safety, and wondering if I’ve made the best choices for my health and my skin. I eat the colors of the rainbow with extra emphasis on greens, but I’ve yet to find a skin care regimen that is as direct as my clean approach to nutrition and sometimes it’s just too overwhelming (and expensive) to even try to make sense of it all.

I want my regimen to be clean and nutritionally-packed with nutrients my skin can access – nutrients that comes from the green kind of plant and not he cement kind of plant. And last week I stumbled upon an option. When a national magazine recently asked me to recommend someone they could talk to about skin care, I instantly thought of a local producer whose line of natural skin care products I had come across a few years back. I never took the time to learn more or try his products then, but as soon as he explained to me that “This is skin care based on whole food nutrition,” I knew he was singing my song. The company is mod.skin, and while they are local to me, they are available nationwide. Here’s an overview:

• Hand-picked organic plant extracts
• Wild-harvested blue-green algae
• Naturally preserved formulas
• No parabens, phthalates, synthetic dyes or fragrances
• Animal-cruelty free
• Vegan
• Products that embody a wholesome and whole food nutrition-derived treatment

These are the values I’m looking for! I want my skin care to work for my unique constitution, and thanks to mod.skin founder, Raffaele, I’m giving these products a try. So far I can tell you that The Weightless Lotion is definitely accurately named, but it’s the Serum Excalibur that’s got me psyched. This product makes my skin feels tight(er) and young(er) – which is always a good thing and something my kale and collard greens don’t accomplish on their own! The cleanser is next on my “to do” list, and I’m hopeful. If you’re interested in trying mod.skin along with me, Raffaele has offered my readers a 10% discount off any order, anytime. Simply enter ten in the coupon code upon checkout. Thank you, Raffaele.

Thanks for the tip, Ellen! I will definitely check out Ann Marie Skin Care. Judging from her site, it looks like it’s only available on line. Do you buy it locally?

My husband surprised me with Clean Start today. (I’ve been enjoying Clean Food since it came out.) In the intro you mention your blog so I immediately googled it. Thank you for bringing attention to products we use on our skin and hair! I was wondering if you have an opinion on Aveda products. Also, can you recommend any deodorants? Thanks!

Hi Elissa, Here’s to your CLEAN START and may you enjoy it in good health! I don’t wear makeup regularly, but when I need it for TV…I use mostly Aveda and I like it very much. My husband is a big fan of their bar soap. I’ve tried their hair and skin care lines, but they are not convenient to my home and I find them to be a bit pricey. My favorite deodorant right now is by Earth Science. I also like their facial A-D-E cleansing milk. Hope that helps!

Terry – I ordered from Ann Marie directly. Her stuff smells great! I also hooked them up with our local shop that specializes in all things non-toxic, for your skin. It’s called W3ll People. Great little shop in Austin. And they have their own line of make-up…great stuff. Their tag line is ‘Hippie Tested Diva Approved’… I love that!
