Giving Thanks

It’s been a month since my last post and I can’t thank you enough for your patience and understanding! October’s nor’easter brought us a foot of snow, and took away Halloween, trees, power, school and life as we knew it for 10+ days. In the aftermath of Storm Albert, I found myself with renewed appreciation for a few of life’s most basic necessities – gifts I take for granted far too often. (Please be sure to read to the end so you don’t miss out on my upcoming holiday giveaways and celebration!)

It doesn’t take long being without WATER to appreciate its valueironic since this same element in excess swept away The Mad River Valley in Vermont just weeks earlier. Nevertheless, with no power to pump water from the well, our lives were instantly consumed with how best to ration what we had, and when and how we could get more.  This was a poignant reminder of how water sustains life and good health.

After water, there is no doubt that FIRE had become much more than a pleasing aesthetic. While I’ve always loved the glow of a candle, for these 10 days the small blue fire of my propane stove was a lifeline that saved food, provided nourishment and even warmed us as we gathered round. And through it all, that which is usually so elusive, TIME, stood still (hence, a full month between blog posts!). With no phones, internet, television or man-made distractions of any kind, we would rise with the sun, sit in the sun for warmth, and sleep as the moon shone in the sky. Our cycles became in sync with nature’s clock, and our deepened connection with friends, family and neighbors nourished our communities.

Today, having finally processed this incredible experience, it is that sense of COMMUNITY that sustains me. Even as I’ve literally fallen off the face of the blogger earth this past month, our CLEAN FOOD community has continued to grow. So, with the holidays upon us and the CLEAN FOOD Facebook page nearing 5,000 fans, I’m devoting myself to celebrating YOU! For the next four Fridays (12/9, 12/16, 12/23 & 12/30) I will randomly draw names (yes, there will be multiple winners each week)! So, if you live in the continental United States…

1. Comment on my blog, or

2. “Share” a Facebook post from the CLEAN FOOD page, or

3. Retweet a post from my Twitter feed, @terrywalters,

…and every time you do so you will be entered for a chance to win! Items being given away include CLEAN FOOD, CLEAN START and a variety of clean living gifts! This is my personal thanks for the incredible support and inspiration you bring to this CLEAN FOOD community.

Eat clean live well!

For those of us that weathered the storms with much less damage and affect, your post is a reminder to appreciate the small things we take for granted. Thanks for that, as well as your inspiring and nourishing posts.

I’m new to this blog and an aspiring vegan. My mom is a librarian and one of your books crossed her path so she recommended it to me. Can’t wait to check out all the wonderful recipes!

I know that the weather was treacherous, but the pictures look so peaceful! I’m glad Ct. is back in action. Isn’t it amazing how communities come together in times of need…one great thing about the storm.
Hope to see sometime when you are down in Virginia!

I know what you mean…living in CT myself, between the power out and now the holidays in full swing, it makes you want to take a moment to reflect on all the blessings you have in your life and enjoy each and every one of them!
